Sorority Sisters Pull Together to Push Away Cigarettes

COLLEGE PARK - Sorority sisters in the University of Maryland at College Park participate in a quit-smoking contest organized by the University Health Center. The sorority that stayed most smoke-free for a month would take home a $500 prize. The contest was a reponse to a spring survey of 1,000 sorority sisters on the College Park campus that showed 65 percent smoked, almost half on a daily basis. Go to Story.


Hundreds Rally to Denounce Racist Hate Letters at UMCP

COLLEGE PARK -  Hundreds of students and faculty members rallied on Nov. 17 at the University of Maryland- College Park to denounce "particularly repellent" hate mail that was sent to black leaders and organizations on campus. Campus police say they have no leads in the case, the sixth incident of a racially motivated intimidating letter that has been recorded at College Park since September, 1998. Go to Story.

Reward Fund Grows in Racial Hate Mail Case

WASHINGTON - A reward fund grew to $10,900 for information on the anonymous author of racially charged hate mail directed at black students and student groups at the University of Maryland at College Park. Campus President Clayton Mote Jr. started the reward fund with a pledge of $1,000 of his own money. The fund snowballed after that, with a $5,000 pledge coming from Prince George's County Executive Wayne Curry.
