Historic Sphere Stands as
Reminder of Biological Warfare
FORT DETRICK - John Fieseler, executive director of the Frederick
County Visitors Center, is working with Army base officials to raise awareness and
boost visits to one of the largest and most unusual relics in the country, the
1-million-liter test sphere. The sphere dates back to the days when the Army not only made
vaccines against biological warfare, but was also developing biological weapons of its

Congressmen Push for Historic Trail
Featuring War of 1812 Sites
WASHINGTON - Federal lawmakers are being asked to expand the
National Trails System to include a route retracing the steps of British invaders and
American defenders in the War of 1812, in battles that left Washington burning. The
successful defense of Baltimore in the same campaign inspired the Star-Spangled Banner.
Committees in both the House and the Senate are scheduled to hear the Star-Spangled Banner

Congressman Tries to Save Wildlife Marshes from Rodents
WASHINGTON - Rep. Wayne Gilchrest, R-Kennedyville, is scheduled to testify Tuesday before
a House committee in an effort to win funding for a pilot program to eliminate nutria, a

"SmartGrowth" Plan Proposed to Limit Rate of Industrialization
WASHINGTON - Maryland officials are scheduled to brief a U.S. Senate task force Wednesday
on the state's "Smart Growth" initiative, which has scuttled projects like the
Manchester bypass in an effort to curb sprawl. Ronald Young of the Maryland Office of
Planning hypothesizes that if current rates do not change, Maryland will consume as much
